There has been an end of yet another disappointing season for Manchester United, with the club staying trophy-less for the second consecutive season. The club came close to winning both the FA Cup and the Europa League but failed to cross beyond the semi-finals. The major silver lining has of course been a third-place finish in the EPL. A remarkable turnaround, as a Champions League qualification, was looking distant for the club languishing at number 6 even as late as December. Recent acquisition Bruno Fernandez has been a very impactful presence in the team, elevating both the morale and standard of performance of his fellow teammates. The Red Devils will look to make further investments that can be as fruitful as Bruno in order to make sure, silverware does come this time. Here is a brief look at what the Manchester United squad can look like in regard to probable signings.
Goalkeeper: This has been an area of uncertainty as David De Gea has been very ordinary throughout the season, with several clear errors in the process. Sergio Romero also is set to leave after years of absence of the first-team action. United has looked to bring in Kasper Schmeichel as a major reinforcement as well as to follow his fathers’ footsteps who incidentally was a United legend in the same position.
Defense: There has been fragility in the center-back position, with fans and analysts not convinced with the pairing of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in spite of keeping 20 and 14 clean sheets respectively. Issa Diop, Ben White, and Benoit Badiashile have been seen as targets for the position. Besides, Alex Sandro is being watched closely by the United board as a better option as left-back instead of Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams.
Midfield: The team’s midfield has seen a major improvement with the pairing of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandez looking really dangerous as well as the options of Fred, Nemanja Matic, and Scott McTominay coming handy in the CDM position. But with rumors about Pogba leaving soon and a lack of depth in the position, United are keen for options. David Brooks, Jack Grealish, Saul Niguez, and Sandro Tonali have been in United’s radar but only time will tell which of them will actually land in Old Trafford.
Forward line: This has been the biggest plus point for Manchester United with the front three of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood outscoring the acclaimed trio of Salah, Mane, and Firmino of Liverpool, the current champions of England. However, there have been problems with the finishing especially with Martial being used as a number 9 by Solskjaer, in spite of playing as a winger throughout his career. Besides, injury problems of the front three have been an issue and the squad does not bolster truly effective replacements in this area with Odion Ighalo and Daniel James being largely inconsistent. Among the wingers, Douglas Costa, Vinicius Jr., and Callum Hudson-Odoi are being considered to strengthen the squad, whereas Paulo Dybala and the young Norwegian talent Isak Hansen-Aaroen have been in Solskjaer’s shopping list for the summer transfer.
